Venice Wooden Boat at Noon Light

A Venetian boatman stands on the edge of a narrow canal in winter, repairing a small wooden gondola under the bright midday sun. He wears a thick wool sweater and leans over the gunwale, his hands busy with a rusted corkscrew and a coiled rope. A metal toolbox sits open on the wet stones beside him, its contents slightly scattered. The canal water reflects the gray sky and the distant bell tower of San Marco. Other boats are moored nearby, their hulls dark against the pale light.
