Mailbox at Dawn Light

Mist rests on the granite steps of a heritage building in Halifax, softening the sharp edges of the urban landscape. A weathered metal mailbox, bolted to a brick pillar, stands slightly ajar, its surface pitted by decades of salt air. Resting precariously on the mailbox’s ledge is a pair of kitchen tongs, left behind in haste or perhaps dropped by a worker taking a break. Nearby, a pigeon pecks at a discarded crust, its gray feathers blending with the fog.
