The still hours before dawn cast a deep blue tint over a Halifax street near the waterfront, where the horizon line is faintly visible above the dark water of the harbor. A weathered wooden gate stands slightly ajar, its rusted metal handle catching the minimal ambient light. Beside it, a cluster of yellow and orange raincoats hangs on a hook, their reflective stripes dull in the low light. The pavement is wet, reflecting the dim glow of a distant streetlamp. An Old English Sheepdog stands patiently near the gate, its woolly coat damp from the coastal mist. A quiet, lived-in moment in Nova Scotia, with the city waking up slowly against the grey sky.
