Late Laundromat Steam and Wet Streets in beneath a flickering underpass light in Kitale

Late Laundromat Steam and Wet Streets

by Rowan Brady

Sodium vapor glow illuminates a row of washing machines inside an open-front laundromat in Kitale, casting orange halos onto the wet pavement outside. Thick plumes of steam rise from the machines, drifting upward into the humid predawn air where they mix with the faint blue spill from a flickering underpass light above. Rain-slicked asphalt reflects the warm machine lights and the cool blue overhead glow in distorted streaks. Puddles gather around the entrance, mirroring the stacked plastic chairs and the corrugated metal roof. The air hangs heavy with moisture, visible as a thin haze clinging to the steam clouds. One puddle at the curb edge ripples slightly, distorting the reflection of a hanging sign.
