Lantern-Lined Bridge Vanishing Into Clouds
by Tim Tanner
Warm paper lanterns glow against the gray mist of a late spring afternoon near Ankara. A suspension bridge stretches forward, its steel cables and deck dissolving into a thick wall of white clouds that obscure the far end. Raindrops speckle the air, creating a soft haze that blurs the distant horizon. Reflected light from a nearby pool of water illuminates the wet stone pathways and the bases of the hanging lanterns. The bridge railing appears slick and dark, against the pale vapor. Small patches of green grass and early spring flowers line the temple grounds, their colors muted by the drizzle. The structure rises from the stone pavement before disappearing into the white void, leaving only the lanterns as anchors to the visible world. One reflection of a red lantern shimmers on a puddle in the foreground.
