Lamb Nursery Under Bulbs in Gambia Paddock
by Casey Arroyo
Hard coastal glare floods the muddy paddock fence line where a simple wooden enclosure houses young lambs. Three heat lamps hang from rough timber beams, casting pools of warm yellow light that cut through the bright afternoon sun. The dry season has stripped the grass to short, dusty stalks, leaving the ground churned into red-brown mud patches around the pen's base. The lambs huddle tightly together, their wool appearing stark white against the shadowed interior of the shelter. One wire mesh runs along the fence, separating the animals from the open, sun-bleached scrubland beyond. Shadows from the roof beams fall sharply across the mud, creating a grid of dark rectangles that contrast with the intense brightness of the open field. The metal brackets holding the bulbs gleam with reflected sunlight.
