Inside a cramped Soweto shebeen kitchen, the overcast midday light spills through a high, barred window, illuminating a chaotic workspace where daily survival plays out. A woman in a faded floral apron stands at a stainless steel sink, her hands submerged in soapy water, scrubbing a heavy cast-iron pot while a pair of thick rubber oven mitts rests precariously on the rim of the basin. Behind her, wire shelves are packed tight with empty amber beer bottles and stacks of white paper napkins, creating a textured wall of commerce. On the counter, a dented storage tin sits next to a worn dust brush, evidence of the constant cleaning required in this high-traffic eatery.
