Under the flat, shadowless light of an overcast Johannesburg midday, a narrow alleyway behind a bustling street food vendor reveals a chaotic work surface. A dented stainless steel sink overflows with soapy water, where a plastic colander and a bottle brush rest precariously on the rim, surrounded by thick white foam and soap streaks climbing the nearby tiled wall. Nearby, a stack of enamel utensil crocks holds wooden spoons and metal tongs, while a vintage Italian majolica plate with faded floral patterns serves as an improvised lid for a large pot.
