Katsudon Bowl with Train Car in Chongqing
Warm amber oil glistens atop a mound of white rice, crowned by a golden-brown pork cutlet and translucent strips of egg. The ceramic bowl sits on a rough wooden counter stained with years of use. Behind the dish, a full passenger train car is embedded directly into the brick wall, its blue and white exterior clashing with the dim, yellow glow of overhead lamps. Early winter shadows stretch across the floor, lengthening as the evening light fades through a high window. Condensation beads on the glass of the train windows, mirroring the steam rising from the hot meal. The metal railing of the train rests inches from the edge of the bowl, creating a sharp boundary between the culinary scene and the impossible transport. one drop of sauce rests on the rim of the plate, catching the light.
