Jobsite Radio on Timber Shelf at Excavation Edge

by Doris Holloway

Pale midday light mixes with the warm spill of a work lamp across a makeshift charging shelf constructed from treated timber and steel brackets. A weathered black radio sits on the dusty surface, its casing marked with fine gray grit. Yellow caution tape stretches taut along the timber frame, separating the equipment from the damp earth beyond. A sheen of moisture coats the steel and darkens the soil, visible evidence of recent rain in the humid air. Dust settles on the rough grain of the wood and the metallic glint of the charger cable. The shelf rests firmly against the trench wall, anchored by the weight of the radio and the tension of the tape. A drop of water rests on the edge of the steel bracket.
