Interrupted Game in Havana
by Khalid Barry
Under the flat, diffuse light of an overcast midday, a weathered wooden table in a Havana patio holds a scene of daily pause. A chipped enamel skillet rests beside a cluster of dark, textured avocados, their skins dull against the bright ceramic. A simple rattan chair sits slightly askew, its weave catching the soft, shadowless light, while a small, worn backgammon board lies open, pieces scattered as if interrupted mid-game. The surface is stained with years of use, reflecting the gray sky in a subtle, matte sheen. In the background, a heavy wooden door with iron studs frames the space, at the base of the intimate arrangement in the sturdy, lived-in architecture of the neighborhood.
