Horizontal Tree in Dhaka Classroom Sunlight

by Elizabeth Black

Pale green leaves spill horizontally from a cracked plaster wall in a Banani classroom, their branches resting directly above rows of worn wooden desks. Late morning light bounces off the off-white walls, casting warm interior shadows across the floorboards. The tree trunk emerges seamlessly from the masonry, fully leafed and healthy, defying gravity while the empty chairs remain undisturbed beneath its canopy. Dust motes float in the shafts of indirect light that filter through the foliage, illuminating the grain of the desk surfaces. One fallen leaf rests on the corner of a student's notebook near the window.
