Hand-painted Majolica Plates in Venice
by Katie Mendez
A stack of three hand-painted majolica plates rests on a narrow stone ledge outside a Venetian palazzo, their vibrant cobalt and ochre glazes catching the warm late afternoon sun. The intricate floral motifs and gilded rims reflect the soft golden light, highlighting the glossy ceramic surface against the weathered, salt-eroded stone beneath. A shadow from an adjacent iron balcony railing stretches across the plates, creating a pattern of dark, parallel lines that contrast with the bright colors. One plate is slightly tilted, revealing a small chip on the rim where the white clay body shows through the painted glaze.
