Ginger Root Cluster Dug From Soil on Table in on a bedside table in Ar Ramtha

Ginger Root Cluster Dug From Soil on Table

by Ralph McFadden

Bright noon light floods the room, bouncing off pale walls to create a flat, even glare across the surface. A cluster of fresh ginger roots rests directly on a wooden bedside table, their knobby, tan skin still coated with dark, rich soil. The earth rests on the crevices between the rhizomes, against the clean, uncluttered wood grain beneath. Shadows fall sharply and short, indicating the high angle of the sun outside. The roots appear heavy and organic against the rigid geometry of the furniture. One clump of dry dirt sits at the base of the largest root segment, marking the boundary between the garden and the interior space.
