Giant Spoon Over Punjab Winter Rooftops
by Evan Barlow
Brass gleams under the low winter sun as a massive spoon arches over the Punjab countryside, its bowl spanning entire city blocks. Below, the city sprawls in a grid of flat rooftops and narrow streets, where tiny figures move like ants against the gray winter ground. Long, sharp shadows stretch diagonally across the rooftops, cast by the impossible silver curve that dominates the sky. The river meanders far below, a ribbon of dark water winding through valleys filled with thick, white fog. The spoon's handle disappears into the haze, suggesting a scale that defies physics while the crisp light reveals every texture of the brickwork and the smooth, polished metal of the giant utensil. The shadow of the spoon falls across a cluster of houses, creating a dark, cool patch on the warm sunlit tiles.
