Giant Quilt Daybed Under Terminal Ceiling in inside a restored train terminal in Kingston

Giant Quilt Daybed Under Terminal Ceiling

by Christine Wiggins

A massive quilted daybed dominates the interior of a restored train terminal, its fabric stretching upward to nearly touch the sloped, timber-beamed ceiling. The bedding features a patchwork of earthy ochres, deep greens, and rusted reds, each square stitched with visible, heavy thread that catches the soft, overcast light filtering through high windows. Low-hanging clouds drift just outside the terminal's open arches, casting a diffuse, gray glow across the weathered stone floor. From a low angle, the scale of the quilt appears impossible, transforming a sleeping object into a landscape of textile ridges and valleys. The rough texture of the wooden beams contrasts with the soft, padded surface of the oversized quilt, while moisture beads on the glass, hinting at the wet season outside. One shadow falls sharply across the bottom corner of the nearest quilt square.
