Giant Iced Mackerel Crate in Zakho Market
by Stefan Barr
Reflected light dances across a narrow Zakho flea market lane paved with worn stones, where low-hanging early autumn clouds diffuse the bright midmorning sun. A fish market porter strides forward, shoulders straining under a crate of iced mackerel that has grown to impossible architectural proportions. The crate towers above the surrounding stalls, its wooden slats thick as building beams and filled with silver fish gleaming like a frozen sea. Water pools on the ground, mirroring the colossal crate and the porter's small figure against the backdrop of colorful fabric awnings. The texture of the ice glitters sharply against the rough wood, while the porter's worn fabric clothes contrast with the smooth, wet scales of the giant fish. The scene ends with one drop of meltwater sliding from the edge of the massive crate onto the stone pavement below.
