Night Porter Carries Iced Mackerel Crate in Tunis
by Iris Lloyd
Cold moonlight spills across the wet stone floor of a Tunisian fish market, illuminating a porter straining under the weight of a wooden crate filled with iced mackerel. The crate rests high above his head, its slats revealing the silver scales and dark backs of the fish packed tightly with crushed ice. Steam rises faintly from the melting ice, visible only as a thin haze in the stark light. Above, dramatic clouds churn across the deep indigo night sky, their edges sharp against the darkness. The porter wears a simple white t-shirt and dark trousers, his muscles tense as he balances the load. Beside him, the edge of a stainless steel counter reflects the pale light, catching droplets of water that have pooled on the ground. one drop of meltwater hangs from the bottom corner of the crate, poised to fall.
