Fishmonger in Rain by Ashgabat Riverbank
by Scott Wilcox
Late autumn rain falls in a brief shower over a narrow alley beside the Ashgabat riverbank. An elderly fishmonger stands in deep silhouette against the soft, diffused light of the early evening sky. His face, lined with the texture of decades, is barely visible in the shadow, yet the contours of his profile remain distinct against the glow. Stacks of folios, likely containing fish or market goods, rise beside him in dark, geometric blocks. The wet pavement reflects the grey sky, creating a shallow mirror that stretches toward the river. Heavy raindrops streak the air, catching the fading light in silver threads. The figure rests at the very edge of the frame, separated from the open water by a narrow strip of wet ground. one drop of water rests on the rim of a wooden crate near his boots.
