Geologist Brushing Ammonite Fossil in Santiago
by Grant Slater
Cool blue twilight washes over a stone workbench in Santiago as a geologist leans forward, methodically clearing shale with a fine brush. The ammonite fossil, with its tight, spiraling whorls, rests partially embedded in the dark, layered rock. Fine dust particles hang in the air, catching the faint ambient light from the surrounding streetlamps. The geologist wears a dark rain jacket, the fabric slightly damp from the light drizzle falling outside the covered workspace. Autumn leaves, turning shades of russet and gold, lie scattered on the ground beyond the bench, against the cool gray of the wet stone. The brush bristles touch the fossil's edge, lifting a thin layer of sediment to reveal the creamy white surface of the ancient shell. Water droplets bead on the rock's surface, reflecting the dim blue glow of the evening sky.
