Folding Stools in Salvador in in Salvador, Brazil

Folding Stools in Salvador

by Cameron Richardson

Under the harsh, bleaching light of a Salvador noon, a street vendor balances a stack of faded red folding stools on the shoulder of a young boy walking past the whitewashed facade of a Pelourinho church. The boy, shirtless and sweating, grips the wobbly stack with practiced ease, his skin glistening against the rough stucco wall behind him. A plastic crate of bruised mangos sits on the pavement nearby, catching the sharp shadows of the iron balconies above. The physical labor of urban life, where domestic objects are repurposed for transit, framed by the colonial architecture that defines this historic district.
