Preparing Produce in Salvador
by Bailey Short
Cool morning light falls through the canopy of a historic courtyard in Salvador, illuminating a weathered concrete ledge where a local vendor prepares for the day. A chipped terracotta pot sits near the edge, its rim stained with soil and dried sap, next to a pair of rusted garden shears resting on a faded blue cloth. The vendor’s hands, dusted with fine white chalk from handling the day’s produce, carefully adjust a wicker basket filled with bright yellow bananas. In the background, the curved facade of a colonial building with peeling pink stucco catches the soft, diffuse light, while a solitary rattan stool leans against a wooden door, waiting for a customer.
