Ferns at Dawn Light
Mist rests on the low-hanging branches of a mature silver fern outside a weatherboard house in the Christchurch suburb of Addington, its fronds heavy with condensation. A black Labrador rests on the damp concrete path, shaking water from its coat in a blurred motion, while behind it, a wooden tool rack mounted on the exterior wall holds a few rusted shovels and rakes. The pale dawn light falls through the fog, softening the edges of the corrugated iron roof and the green-painted door frame. Potted succulents sit on a small bench near the entrance, their fleshy leaves glistening, against the rough, wet timber of the porch.
