Eucalyptus at First Light

First light after rain washes over a wet Adelaide street, reflecting the soft grey sky and the warm glow of a nearby café’s interior. Through the steamed glass of the window, a cluttered workbench comes into focus, anchored by a pair of rusted garden shears resting on a damp wooden surface. Beside them, a chipped white mug holds a bundle of dried eucalyptus twigs, their grey-green leaves against the dark wood. Water rings stain the varnish near the base of the mug, evidence of recent use. Outside, the pavement glistens, mirroring the blurred shapes of passing pedestrians and the red brick facade of a heritage building.
