A dark blue enamel doormat rests flat against the base of a sliding glass door in a Tokyo apartment entryway. Light rain blurs the view through the glass, reflecting the warm glow of an indoor hallway lamp onto the wet concrete threshold. The coarse texture of the mat absorbs the dampness while small water droplets bead along its frayed rubber edges. One white house key lies on the dry surface near the mat's upper corner.
