Elderly Woman Beside Ziguinchor Canal

Tropical sunlight strikes the back of an elderly woman seated near the canal edge in Ziguinchor. Her weathered hands rest on her knees, skin mapped with deep lines and dark spots from years of sun exposure. Behind her, the canal water reflects the low-hanging clouds that obscure the sky. The dry season air leaves the surrounding vegetation sparse and dusty. Bright light casts sharp shadows across her clothing and the rough concrete bank. She faces the water, her posture still and quiet. A small ripple moves across the dark surface where a stone has been tossed. The texture of her knuckles contrasts with the smooth, wet stone beside her.
