Washing Hands in Dakar

by Tabitha Cain

Early morning light spills across a narrow Dakar street where a woman in a vibrant, patterned wax-print wrapper stands at a low concrete washbasin, rinsing her hands after morning ablutions. The rough, sun-baked stucco wall behind her bears the dark, pitted marks of rust around hinge screws from a nearby metal shutter, against the smooth, glazed ceramic of the basin that shows faint mineral rings from hard water. A few damp cotton towels hang loosely from a makeshift line strung between a rusted pole and a window grille, their bright colors catching the first strong edge of sunlight.
