Early Morning Motmot Perched on Autumn Vine in near Rapid City

Early Morning Motmot Perched on Autumn Vine

by Hana Hodge

Low golden light from the horizon cuts through a thick layer of dust hovering just above the dry ground near Rapid City. A motmot rests on a slender, twisting vine, its pendulum tail hanging straight down like a dark thread against the pale morning sky. The bird's feathers show deep emerald and rusty orange tones, catching the weak sun as it stands motionless. Autumn has stripped the surrounding branches, leaving only bare twigs and a few withered leaves clinging to the stem. Fine particles of dust swirl in the low beams, creating a hazy curtain that softens the background. The vine bends slightly under the weight of the bird, its rough bark texture visible where the talons grip. one drop of dew rests on the tip of a nearby leaf, refracting the morning light.
