Hamerkop Bird Nesting in Concrete Lobby

by Kirk West

Soft, diffused daylight falls through the ribbed concrete ceiling of a spacious Alexandria lobby, illuminating a massive stick nest perched high on a structural beam. The Hamerkop bird stands on the rough, interwoven twigs, its grey plumage against the pale, wet concrete surfaces below. Autumn leaves in muted browns and oranges drift across the open floor, caught in the gentle air. The heavy overcast sky outside casts an even, shadowless light that highlights the texture of the dried grasses and the smooth curves of the architectural ribs. Water droplets rest on the lower edges of the concrete pillars, reflecting the muted grey of the sky. One twig, weathered and pale, protrudes sharply from the nest's edge, anchoring the structure against the vast, open interior.
