First Light Formation Inspection at Raipur Airbase
by Joe Byers
Rain-slicked tarmac stretches across a wide panoramic view as dawn breaks over the Raipur airbase flight line. Soldiers stand in rigid rows, their boots aligned with mathematical precision against the wet, dark asphalt. Deep shadows engulf the front of their uniforms, while sharp rim light catches the edges of their shoulders and the brims of their caps. A senior officer moves down the line, clipboard in hand, checking rank tabs on sleeves that glisten with moisture. Flags mounted on poles snap violently to the right, their fabric straining against the rotor wash churning up fine dust and rain mist. The air is thick with suspended particles illuminated by the low, gray morning sun. A wet boot heel reflects the pale sky in a distorted mirror on the ground. The officer stops, pen hovering over a page of notes.
