A narrow, damp alley in North Kolkata opens under a flat, overcast sky, the grey light reflecting off the wet terracotta tiles. A young boy in a faded blue shirt stands on a low wooden stool, his back to the camera, reaching up to oil a rusted iron hinge on a heavy teak door. Beside him, a ginger cat with a torn ear sits patiently on a stack of plastic crates, watching the man’s hands work. To the right, a small black table fan rests on a windowsill, its blades still, surrounded by scattered mechanical pencils and a half-finished sketch of a rickshaw.
