Cyclist Pausing in Tokyo

Sunlight cuts through the high winter sky, illuminating a narrow alleyway in Shinjuku where a delivery cyclist pauses beside a vending machine. The bright red and blue panels of the machine reflect off the wet pavement, against the dull grey concrete of the surrounding buildings. A small, white plastic sign hangs from a wire, advertising fresh vegetables, while a faded calendar page peels from the wall nearby. The cyclist, bundled in a thick navy coat, adjusts his gloves, his breath visible in the cold air. A stray cat sits on a stack of cardboard boxes, watching the street with alert eyes.
