Pale morning light diffuses through heavy fog, softening the sharp geometry of a narrow Sapporo alleyway paved with damp granite blocks. A local bakery owner, bundled in a faded blue windbreaker, balances a steaming cardboard box of fresh melon pan against a wet brick wall, the steam rising in thin, translucent ribbons that mingle with the mist. Beside him, a row of bright orange delivery bicycles leans against a corrugated metal shutter, their reflective stickers glowing faintly in the gray light. A stray calico cat sits perched on a stack of empty milk crates, watching the vendor with calm indifference.
