Pouring Tea in Beirut

by Caroline Conner

Blue hour settles over a cramped Beirut sidewalk café, where the cool ambient light fights the warm spill from a flickering fluorescent tube above a tea station. A local vendor, his face softened by shadow, carefully pours steaming mint tea from a tall metal teapot into a small glass, the liquid catching the neon reflection of a nearby pharmacy sign. On the chipped Formica counter, a stack of newspapers rests beside a worn leather notebook, its pages filled with hurried Arabic script. One saucer sits overturned, revealing a faint ring of dried sugar, while the vendor’s hand, stained with ink, adjusts the notebook’s position.
