Sunlight slants through the tall, narrow windows of a Victorian kitchen in the Mission District, catching the fine haze of flour dust suspended in the air above a dark, stained stone countertop. A ceramic colander rests half-filled with damp dough, its perforated sides reflecting the warm, amber light of the setting sun. Beside it, a wooden grater lies on its side, its metal teeth coated in pale powder, while a faded floral blanket is draped over the back of a wrought-iron chair nearby. The quiet aftermath of baking, with flour dust settling along the baseboard and the edges of cupboard doors, showing the texture of daily life against the historic architecture of the home.
