Sunlight pours flat and hard over a steep San Francisco street corner, illuminating a narrow sidewalk where a baker in a flour-dusted apron balances a heavy wooden tool caddy against a brick wall. Beside him, a metal dish drainer overflows with wet ceramic plates, catching the harsh noon glare on their wet rims. A few wool scarves in muted earth tones hang loosely from a nearby railing, swaying slightly in the coastal breeze, while a small brass banjo rests on a crate nearby, its wood grain visible under the direct light.
