Counter Scene in Beirut at Indigo Twilight After Sunset
by Hannah Ray
A cramped kitchen counter in a Beirut apartment is cluttered with the remnants of a late dinner under the deep indigo twilight filtering through the window. A metal drying rack stands overloaded with wet dishes, casting long shadows across the scuffed painted wood surface. White soap streaks mark the wall tile behind the sink, evidence of hurried cleaning. Several ceramic soup bowls sit stacked near a chipped gravy boat, while a single mushroom rests on a plate beside a forgotten measuring spoon ring. The chaotic intimacy of post-meal cleanup, illuminated by the fading natural light that highlights the texture of the worn surfaces and the steam still rising faintly from the warm ceramics.
