Fluorescent light spills from a convenience store in Erbil, cutting through the early evening sleet. A corner kebab shop sits beside a tangled pile of discarded bike chains, their metal links glistening wetly. Deep shadows swallow the lower walls while a sharp rim light traces the edges of the steam rising from the food stall. The autumn air hangs heavy, visible in the way rain coats the pavement and rests on the dark metal of the chains. Red and orange hues from the shop's signage reflect off the slick ground, against the gray, falling precipitation. one drop of water slides down a vertical pipe, merging with the puddle below.
