Combs at Flat Noon Light

Flat noon light bleaches the white-washed stucco wall of a Dakar corner shop, flattening shadows into gray halos. A local woman in a vibrant wax-print wrapper leans against the doorframe, balancing a woven palm-fiber basket on her hip while sorting through a stack of faded tourist postcards spread on a low wooden table. Beside her, a cluster of blank notebooks rests near a pair of well-worn hair combs, abandoned by a previous customer. The heat shimmers off the corrugated metal roof above, distorting the view of the busy street where a blue minibus idles. The quiet commerce of the afternoon, where paper goods and woven textures collide under the harsh, revealing sun.
