Resting Dog in Dakar
by Shannon Pate
Under the harsh, flat glare of a Dakar noon, a street-side vendor balances a stack of chipped white enamel bowls on a makeshift table constructed from stacked crates and plywood. The bright sunlight washes out the color of the surrounding asphalt, making the glossy ceramic surfaces reflect sharp, blinding highlights. Beside the bowls, a pair of worn leather sandals rests near a faded blue tarp that provides minimal shade. A brown dog lies curled beneath the table, its fur bleached by the sun, ignoring the activity above. In the background, the blurred shapes of yellow Senegal taxis and the geometric outlines of concrete apartment blocks establish the urban context without drawing focus from the vendor’s quiet, heat-dazed stillness.
