Silver dawn light washes over rows of nested metal shopping carts parked in a wet concrete corral outside a supermarket near Edmonton. Cold rain beads on the chrome frames and reflects the pale sky. The carts align in tight, converging lines that lead toward a distant vanishing point. Puddles on the ground mirror the gray overhead clouds. Humid air hangs heavy, visible as a slight haze around the metal surfaces. The red plastic handles stand out against the muted grays and silvers of the wet pavement. One cart sits slightly askew at the end of the row, its wheels resting in a shallow pool of water. The scene shows the quiet stillness of early morning before the store opens.
