Cobbler at Sunset with Identical Doors
by Lacey Dillon
Warm amber light from the setting sun spills across a cobblestone street in Termez, illuminating a cobbler seated at a wooden last. The artisan holds a half-sewn shoe, fingers stained with leather dye, working against a backdrop of early winter fog that softens the distant horizon. Flanking the narrow alleyway, rows of identical wooden doors stretch endlessly into the distance, defying the logic of a residential corridor. Each door features the same brass handle and weathered grain, creating a rhythmic, impossible pattern that vanishes into the hazy twilight. The cobbler's shadow stretches long and sharp across the stones, ending abruptly where the fog thickens. one drop of oil rests on the wooden bench beside the shoe.
