Rain-slicked cobblestones in Bilbao’s Casco Viejo reflect the pale, diffused light of early morning, where a local cobbler stands before his open workshop door. He wears a dark apron stained with wax and leather dust, his hands busy with a shoe brush and a socket wrench resting on a nearby crate of tools. One rattan chair sits askew in the doorway, its fibers damp and darkened by the mist. Behind him, a wall sconce casts a faint, warm glow against the wet stone, illuminating a bottle of polish and a cluster of pebbles pressed into the mud near the threshold. The quiet, tactile rhythm of work beginning in the damp air, with no customers yet in sight.
