Climber Dynoing on Hillside Boulders at Blue Hour

by Brenda Parks

Late spring blue light washes the Toronto hillside in cool indigo tones while a climber hangs suspended between textured granite holds. Deep shadows obscure the rock face, but a sharp rim of pale twilight outlines the climber's extended arms and tensed legs. Wind whips loose strands of hair and ripples the fabric of the climbing shorts, showing the fierce physical commitment required for the dyno. The rough, pitted surface of the boulder contrasts with the smooth, taut muscles of the athlete. Every finger grip presses hard against the stone, fingers white with pressure, as the climber launches toward the next hold in the fading light.
