Cleaning Counter in Valencia

A narrow tapas bar in Valencia glows under the mixed orange sodium and cool LED spill from the street outside. Behind the counter, a tired barback wipes down a stainless steel prep surface, his fingerprints smudging the polished metal near a stack of ceramic plates waiting to be washed. A plastic cooler jug sits half-empty, condensation dripping onto the tile floor, while a single dish brush rests in a ceramic bowl of soapy water. Outside the open shutter, a Maltese dog sits patiently on the sidewalk, watching a passerby. Potted geraniums line the window ledge, their red petals catching the neon sign’s reflection.
