Chocolate Vendor Breaking Slabs at Banff Dawn Market

Low-hanging gray clouds press against the steep canyon walls of a narrow Banff flea market lane just as nautical dawn breaks. Deep shadows pool around the vendor's stall, where a sharp beam of rim light cuts across a wooden counter. The vendor, clad in a heavy wool coat suitable for late spring chill, grips a large dark chocolate slab. Their hands work a heavy knife to break the confection into rough, glossy chunks for sampling. Beside the counter, metal racks hold small glass jars, their surfaces catching the faint silver light filtering through the mist. The texture of the cracked chocolate contrasts with the rough-hewn timber of the stall. One shard of dark brown rests on the edge of the board, its fractured surface reflecting the pale morning sky.
