Vendor Scaling Salmon on Crushed Ice at Dawn in beside a fish counter in Anchorage

Vendor Scaling Salmon on Crushed Ice at Dawn

by Grant Beltran

Silver scales scatter across a bed of crushed ice as a vendor works beside a stainless steel fish counter in Anchorage. Soft, diffused dawn light falls through coastal mist, turning wet surfaces into shimmering planes of gray and blue. Steam rises faintly from the melting ice, catching the first rays of the endless summer morning. The vendor's hands grip a salmon that gleams with fresh moisture, moving with practiced rhythm. Awnings overhead drip condensation onto the counter, where piles of trimmed fillets wait. The dampness is visible in the way light reflects off the slick metal and the vendor's apron. A drop of water hangs from the edge of a cutting board before falling.
