Street Sweeper in Kolkata
by Gracie Le
A Kolkata street sweeper pauses at a corner near a colonial-era building with peeling lime plaster, his white cotton dhoti and faded blue shirt contrasting against the damp, grey pavement. Early morning light falls through the canopy of an ancient banyan tree, casting long, sharp shadows across the scene. He holds a traditional broom made of bundled twigs, resting it against a stack of discarded cardboard boxes near a rusted metal drain cover. The air is cool and misty, clinging to the rough texture of the brick wall behind him. A few stray leaves and dust bunnies gather in the corner, highlighting the gritty reality of the city waking up.
