Ceramic Bowls in Fukuoka
by Imani James
Blue hour settles over a narrow Shitennoji-dori backstreet in Fukuoka, where the cool ambient glow mixes with the warm spill from a tiny yakitori stall. A vendor in a blue happi coat tends to skewers, the steam rising into the damp air, while neon signs reflect in puddles on the asphalt. Beside the cart, a stack of glazed ceramic bowls catches the red light, their surfaces mirroring the blurred motion of passing commuters. A few fruit crates sit stacked near the entrance of a closed izakaya, holding discarded bamboo skewers. The rough texture of wet pavement with the smooth, reflective glaze of the ceramics, showing the transient rhythm of evening dining in a dense urban corridor.
