Washing Berries in Fukuoka

by Liliana McGowan

A narrow service alley in Hakata ward glistens with morning dew, the wet asphalt reflecting the pale blue sky just after sunrise. A local shopkeeper, wearing a faded indigo apron, stands before a small stainless steel wash basin, rinsing a cluster of dark red berries under a thin stream of water from a brass tap. Behind him, the entrance to a traditional izakaya is secured by a heavy iron deadbolt, its surface dull and scratched from years of use. To the side, a stack of white ceramic cushions rests on a low wooden pallet, protected by a translucent plastic sheet that catches the early light.
